A section of opposition coalition have accused the government of issuing national ID cards only to areas that are seen as politically loyal, warning that thousands of eligible voters may not get their names on the voter roll ahead of the 2027 General Election.

At the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) headquarters, in a ceremony to welcome new members, the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua demanded that the government immediately stop what he called discriminatory registration practices.

He said that the national ID issuance exercise should be fair and transparent so that all eligible Kenyans can get equal opportunities to register irrespective of their political party or area of habitation.

DCP party has also accused the ongoing registration process of being selective which in their view, could lead to intentional exclusion of some communities from getting identity documents which they add, are a prerequisite for voter registration and participation in the electoral process.

Introducing a new gubernatorial candidate for Kiambu, party leaders also called upon the youth countrywide to make the most of the remaining period for voter registration in large numbers so that they may be able to defend their democratic rights.
