Opinion: Embracing Patriotism for National Unity and Progress

By :Mwalimu Muthisya

Patriotism is a cornerstone of a nation’s economic, social, and political growth. In recent times, Kenya has witnessed the profound impact of patriotism—or the lack thereof—on its stability and progress.

The period of uncertainty nearly brought the country to its knees, underscoring the critical need for national unity and collective effort.

It is in this context that I extend my gratitude to Honorable Raila Odinga for his timely display of patriotism. His actions, despite facing criticism from certain quarters, have contributed significantly to the unity of our nation.

By stepping up at a crucial moment, Raila Odinga demonstrated a commitment to Kenya’s greater good, setting aside personal grievances for the sake of national harmony.

However, recent statements by individuals such as Eric Omondi and Booker Omole raise concerns about their understanding of the current political landscape.

Their claims that Kenya lacks Members of Parliament and a President reveal a troubling disconnect from reality.

Such pronouncements suggest a profound ideological bankruptcy and an alarming disregard for Kenya’s democratic processes and leadership.

It is perplexing to see these individuals questioning the legitimacy of President Ruto’s leadership. If they find the current leadership so lacking, one must wonder what their purpose is in the country.

Their rhetoric not only undermines the hard-won stability but also reflects poorly on their grasp of leadership and political realities.

Leadership is not about boasting or issuing threats; it is about understanding and contributing to the greater good.

If Eric Omondi and Booker Omole truly believe in their convictions, they should channel their energies into the electoral process and see if they can garner the support needed to be elected.

This would provide them with a clearer perspective on the challenges and responsibilities of leadership.

Moreover, the expectation that President Ruto should have resolved all issues left by the previous administration within two years is both unrealistic and unfair.

The previous regime had ten uninterrupted years to address various challenges, and expecting rapid fixes from the current administration within such a short period is unreasonable.

Despite the hurdles, President Ruto has made notable progress. The economy, which was in disarray due to previous mismanagement, is showing signs of recovery. Food prices have decreased, and the exchange rate has stabilized significantly from its previous highs.

These achievements, often overlooked by critics, are a testament to the President’s efforts to stabilize and revitalize the economy.

For those who continue to criticize, it is essential to acknowledge the tangible progress made and provide the President with the time and space needed to continue his work.

Patriotism involves supporting our leaders and institutions as they navigate the complex journey of national development.

It is through collective support and understanding that Kenya can truly thrive and overcome its challenges.
