President William Ruto has announced that construction of a university in Nyandarua County will begin within the next month, backed by a clear funding plan from the government. Speaking during the burial of former Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho on April 8, he said he will personally return to launch the project.

The head of state revealed that KSh 350 million has already been allocated to kickstart construction works, including key facilities and student hostels. A further KSh 1 billion has been set aside to support the institution’s operations once it becomes functional, signalling a strong financial commitment to the project.

Nyandarua University College, which was gazetted in 2025, is currently operating from the Ol Joro Orok Agricultural Training Centre after admitting its first students in September that year. It offers programmes such as agriculture, commerce, education, and agribusiness. Plans are underway to relocate the institution to the Captain Centre in Ol Kalou, on a 50-acre site that will be developed from the former Salient Secondary School grounds.

The president explained that the relocation followed requests by local leaders to change the original site. To facilitate the move, the government released KSh 10 million, followed by an additional KSh 100 million. Of this amount, KSh 20 million was allocated to Salient School, while KSh 80 million will go toward putting up a tuition block at the new location.

Ruto’s development projects in Nyandarua County

Beyond the university project, Ruto highlighted several ongoing and planned developments in Nyandarua. These include KSh 1.42 billion already paid to settle hospital bills under Social Health Authority (SHA). 345,000 residents have registered under SHA in Nyandarua alone.

He said KSh 800 million has been committed to complete the J.M. Kariuki Hospital by October 2026, while construction of a modern stadium is expected to wrap up before December 2026.

Road upgrades across key routes are ongoing, with new works set to begin on the Kwa Haraka to Kinamba stretch. The head of state added that reforms in the coffee sector have pushed prices up to between KSh 120 and KSh 150 per kilogram after eliminating cartels.
