Motorists who drive under the influence of alcohol have been put on notice after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) announced the return of alcoblow operations across the country.
In a statement on Monday, NTSA said the exercise will be conducted jointly with the National Police Service as part of efforts to curb road accidents caused by drunk driving.
The authority said officers will be deployed on major highways and urban roads to carry out random breathalyser tests on motorists suspected of driving while intoxicated.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility. We urge all motorists to obey traffic laws and never drink and drive,” NTSA said.
The agency warned that drivers found exceeding the legal alcohol limit will face prosecution under the Traffic Act.
The renewed crackdown follows a rise in road crashes, some of which have been linked to reckless and drunk driving. NTSA said the operation is aimed at protecting lives and making Kenyan roads safer for all users.
The authority urged motorists to cooperate with traffic officers and make responsible decisions whenever they consume alcohol.
The return of alcoblow checks marks one of the latest measures by the government to tighten enforcement of traffic laws and reduce fatalities on the country’s roads.
