Newly appointed judges of the High Court of Kenya and the Environment and Land Court have pledged to respect ethical leadership and professionalism by signing the Leadership and Integrity Code during an induction ceremony held in Nairobi.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) witnessed the event, considering it a major milestone in strengthening accountability transparency efficiency, and integrity in the Judiciary.

At the event, EACC Deputy Director of Ethics, Development and Monitoring, David Kaboro, explained to the judges the requirements of the Leadership and Integrity Code and called on them to abide by Chapter Six of the Constitution.

He conveyed that holding a leadership position is a public trust that calls for leaders to be people-centred while at the same time, preserving the dignity of office and the honour of the nation.

Kaboro cautioned the judges that their primary role is to be servants to the citizens and not to be overlords, citing that the Judiciary is the pillar of justice and the most entrusted institution for the public.

“Cases will be brought before you that will require interacting with individuals from various walks of life, and That means, these interactions should reflect the highest levels of integrity. “, Kaboro remarked.

The EACC further urged the judges to always uphold the highest ethical standards of conduct, accountability and professionalism while carrying out their duties.

The Leadership and Integrity Act needs the newly elected, nominated and appointed State officers to sign and embrace the Leadership and Integrity Code as well as take their oath of office.

The commission has reiterated its determination to keep collaborating with the Judiciary in fostering ethics, integrity and accountability in public service for the Kenyan people.
