President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has suffered another political setback after Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro announced he had officially walked away from the ruling party, saying it had abandoned the ideals that convinced millions of Kenyans to vote for it in the 2022 General Election.
The outspoken legislator, once considered one of Ruto’s closest allies and among the key architects of the Kenya Kwanza campaign in the Mt Kenya region, said his decision was not a rushed one, revealing that he had already closed the UDA chapter and was now consulting widely before unveiling his next political move.
Addressing residents during a public meeting on June 4th, Nyoro accused the party of straying from the promises it made to Kenyans, particularly on fixing the economy and improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
“The decision on whether I should leave UDA or not was made a long time ago. That chapter is closed. What I am consulting on now is the next political direction,” Nyoro told the gathering.
The MP maintained that his next move would not be driven by political excitement but by what he believes is in the best interest of the country.
Nyoro has, over the past year, increasingly distanced himself from President Ruto’s administration, openly criticising some of its economic decisions and accusing the ruling party of abandoning the agenda it sold to Kenyans during the campaigns.
“It is the UDA party that deviated. When we were campaigning, I had a chance to sell the party’s agenda to Kenyans, but I believe the party has since moved away from what we promised the people,” he said in an earlier interview explaining his fallout with the party.
His exit is expected to shake political calculations in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region, where alliances continue to shift ahead of the 2027 General Election. The development also raises fresh questions about whether more leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza coalition could follow the same path as political realignments gather momentum.
Although Nyoro did not disclose his next political destination, his announcement is likely to fuel speculation over whether he will join the emerging opposition movement or chart an independent course as the battle for Mt Kenya’s political influence intensifies.
