Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri has announced plans to revive a forum focused on fostering unity in the Mt Kenya region.
As the leader of The Service Party (TSP), Kiunjuri emphasized that the Mt Kenya Unity Forum will concentrate on addressing regional needs rather than engaging in personality-driven politics.
This announcement comes amid ongoing political discussions and rising tensions among some Mt Kenya leaders.
Past efforts to unite the region have often faltered due to their focus on individual personalities rather than addressing substantive issues.
Kiunjuri acknowledged this and highlighted the importance of focused dialogue and cooperation in tackling community challenges.
In an interview with Inooro FM on Tuesday, Kiunjuri shared that the reformed forum will operate without formal leaders, instead using conveners to facilitate discussions. The goal is to address broader regional concerns rather than getting entangled in personal matters.
“The forum, which was postponed last month, will reconvene soon with a clear focus on serving and addressing regional concerns,” Kiunjuri said.
He also refuted media claims that discussions during President William Ruto’s visit to Central Kenya included debates about the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
“We, as Mt Kenya leaders, will soon convene a meeting with over 60 elected representatives, regardless of their political affiliations. Our focus has always been on issues that benefit the people of this region, not on personal or political disputes,” Kiunjuri stated.
He further emphasized that the upcoming meeting of Mt Kenya leaders will focus on strategizing and planning the way forward for the region.
“Our priority is the Mt Kenya region. We are not targeting individuals, despite what some reports may suggest,” he added.
Kiunjuri clarified that his differences with Gachagua are purely political, not personal.
“You cannot go around labeling elected leaders as traitors and then claim to be uniting the people. However, we are pleased that the Deputy President has softened his stance,” he remarked. “I saw him addressing the public, stating that the Mountain region is fully aligned with the government. That is the declaration we have always wanted him to make.”
A week ago, Gachagua addressed Kikuyu radio stations, criticizing unnamed leaders for allegedly exploiting anti-government protests for political gain. He acknowledged the internal conflicts within Mt Kenya and urged leaders to support President Ruto and work towards unity.
“I urge our people to stop these internal fights and support President Ruto in delivering on his promises. We must remain united and speak with one voice,” Gachagua stated.
During a recent three-day tour of the region, President Ruto also called on leaders to support each other and promote growth.
“I want to plead with my fellow leaders not to divide Kenyans. We must unite our people for the sake of peace and development,” he said.
