The information communication and innovation committee in the National Assembly has commended the government for the internet connectivity project, calling it a key factor for a better national security, healthcare, and education.
The legislators chaired by John Kiarie, the Committee Chair, said that the connectivity going local was going to speed up the implementation of government digital services, create jobs in the digital sector and attract new customers in e-commerce.
Among others, the MPs cited the integration of internet services in police stations as a major development in surveillance and security management. For instance, they observed that technology has empowered the police in Turkana. “Connectivity is not just about communication about changing lives and unlocking opportunities in every sector of our society,” said Kiarie
The MPs made the statements while on an oversight mission to the counties of Turkana, Uasin Gishu, and Trans-Nzoia to acquaint themselves with the progress of the Eldoret–Nadapal Fiber-Optic Line.
The eventual manifestation of this facility is expected to alleviate the digital divide in the area and make Kenya more accessible by road through the neighboring countries.
