Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Thursday met a group of young Kenyans who paid him a courtesy visit, using the engagement to urge them to take an active role in the country’s democratic process.

Matiang’i encouraged the youths, most of them from the Gen Z demographic, to register as voters, noting that their participation is critical to strengthening democracy and ensuring inclusive national decision-making.

He said he spent the day engaging the young people on the importance of voter registration and civic participation, stressing that meaningful change begins when citizens choose to be involved.

Matiang’i observed that although young people make up the largest share of Kenya’s population, their turnout during elections has often remained below expectations.

He noted that increased youth participation would play a key role in shaping leadership choices, public policy, and accountability in the years ahead.
