Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service Eliud Lagat and his Administration Police Service counterpart Gilbert Masengeli led senior police officers and other dignitaries at the funeral of Senior Assistant Inspector General Lazarus Simiyu Opicho in Trans Nzoia County on Friday, October 16, 2026.
The funeral service was held in Sirende, Kitale, where colleagues and other mourners gathered to pay their last respects to the late senior police officer.
Opicho served as commandant of the Security of Government Buildings and VIP Protection Unit. He also served as the founding commandant of the Judiciary Police Unit, which was established in 2021 to strengthen security within the judicial system.
His work involved overseeing security arrangements for government installations and VIPs, as well as supporting the protection of judicial officers and court facilities.
Opicho died on September 28, 2026, while receiving treatment at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi.
His death marked the loss of a senior officer who had served in key security roles within the National Police Service.
The presence of Lagat and Masengeli at the funeral brought together the leadership of the country’s two main police services to honour their departed colleague.
The National Police Service shared photographs of the funeral service, showing the two deputy inspectors general alongside senior officers and other dignitaries in attendance.
