A representative group of leaders from Kisii County have merged with Kenyans from everywhere to mourn the passing of the veteran opposition leader and political icon, Raila Amolo Odinga. The former Prime Minister, a hallmark of the fight for democracy and justice, has been recognized as one of the most influential figures of Kenya’s history after independence.
In Kisii, both the leaders and the people not only lamented the death of Odinga, but they also considered him a revolutionary reformist who, among other things, through his steadfast loyalty to freedom and human rights, changed the political landscape of the country. They affirmed that he was a binder of the society that he let go off the iron hand for the benefit of the motherland.
“We have lost a true patriot and a defender of democracy. Raila Odinga was the only one who understood the toughest issues that Kenyans faced and he turned them into his and people’s democratic struggles. What greatness in his courage and visionary genius that he embodies will forever inspire coming generations,” an elder of the local community remarked.
After the national mourning, religious figures also grieved over the death. Africa Inland Church (AIC) Nairobi Deputy Presiding Bishop Paul Kirui, in particular, eulogized Odinga as a servant leader of the least and a patriot who lived his life for democracy, unity and justice.
The first Lake Region Economic Bloc Climate Change and Agri-Expo Summit, held in Kakamega, was disrupted due to President William Ruto’s orderto stop any other public gathering during the period of national mourning. The summit attendees paid last tribute to Odinga, calling him a national hero whose principles of fairness and governance continue to be the compass of Kenya’s democratic trek.
As so many praises from different parts of the country keep coming, Kenyans are one in the memory of Raila Amolo Odinga as a man of prophetic vision, unparalleled bravery and lifelong fight for justice which eventually changed the course of the nation’s history.
