Kirinyaga County Commissioner Shufaa Omar Mwijuma has ordered the immediate closure of two clubs in Kerugoya and Kagio over allegations of nude dancing.
Mwijuma issued the directive during a security meeting on Monday, saying authorities would move against the establishments after conducting due diligence and verifying the allegations.
She directed security officers to visit the two clubs on Thursday as part of efforts to enforce the closure order.
The commissioner expressed concern over reports that young women were being made to dance without clothes for entertainment in the clubs.
“Why should we have people being forced to dance without clothes?” Mwijuma asked.
She described the practice as inhumane and said she would continue fighting establishments engaging in the practice for as long as she remains Kirinyaga County Commissioner.
According to Mwijuma, subjecting young women to the alleged humiliation of dancing without clothes was unacceptable and required firm action from security agencies.
The directive comes as Kirinyaga authorities intensify efforts to address activities they consider harmful to young people and families in the county.
The county has recently stepped up enforcement against illicit alcohol, with State House Head of Special Projects and Programmes Dennis Itumbi announcing a 14-day multi-agency crackdown targeting the manufacture, distribution and sale of illicit and counterfeit alcohol.
The campaign brings together security agencies, NACADA, KRA, the Anti-Counterfeit Authority and the Kenya Bureau of Standards, among other stakeholders.
Mwijuma has been involved in the county’s efforts to coordinate the crackdown on illicit alcohol and related activities.
The latest directive adds clubs and entertainment establishments to the security concerns being examined by authorities in the county.
However, the allegations against the two clubs are yet to be independently established, with the planned inspection expected to help authorities verify the claims before further enforcement action.
The commissioner directed the relevant security teams to undertake the exercise and take appropriate action based on their findings.
