Principal Secretary for National Treasury Chris Kiptoo believes that the Gilgil-Nakuru-Mau Summit Road Project is a significant upgrade to the Northern Corridor that will transform the people’s lives and economic activities in a substantial way.
Speaking after inspecting the ongoing works alongside members of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Committee, Kiptoo said the project is expected to ease the persistent traffic congestion that has affected motorists travelling to western Kenya, neighbouring Uganda and other East African countries for many years
According to Kiptoo, the idea of founding a world-class infrastructure is attractive where he believes that the project will effectively be a game changer and that the residents of the region will witness the positive changes enabled by the road within the shortest time possible.
The inspection tour covered sections of the corridor currently under construction by the Kenya National Highways Authority in partnership with Shandong Hi-Speed Road and Bridge International Engineering Co., Ltd.
According to PS Kiptoo, the project involves the construction of a six-lane dual carriageway between Gilgil and Nakuru, a four-lane elevated carriageway within Nakuru Town, and a four-lane dual carriageway stretching from Nakuru to Mau Summit.
However, the project is expected to ease the persistent traffic congestion that has affected motorists travelling to western Kenya, neighbouring Uganda and other East African countries for many years.
The development will also include toll stations along the corridor as part of efforts to support maintenance and sustainability of the highway infrastructure.
The road project is expected to be completed by June 2027 and is anticipated to greatly improve transport efficiency, enhance road safety, and stimulate both local and regional trade.
