The conflict over a 58-acre piece of land in Githunguri, Kiambu County would be a face off between cultural heritage concerns and housing development for affordable housing.
The Kikuyu Council of Elders led by the Kiama-kiama High Priest, carried out a ritual of the disputed land to emphasize its historical value. The elders together with some parts of the local community argue that the land was reserved as a memorial site to Mau Mau fighters who were killed by colonial authorities in the early 1950s.
The ceremony involved the slaughter of a single-colored goat as a sacred ritual. The elders communed with God through their prayers, asking for wisdom and good guidance on the land that is still under dispute.
On the other hand, another group of people argue that the piece of land has already been demarcated for the housing project under the government’s affordable housing programme thus the two sides development and cultural preservation seem to be on a collision course.
The issue has attracted legal intervention as the Environment and Land Court in Thika has put on hold any works ongoing or planned on the land.The case is scheduled for mention on July 6, 2026, as stakeholders await further direction on the fate of the disputed land.
