Ted Kalanda a member of renowned Mushroom Band passed away on Tuesday night , September 17, 2024. The renowned musician passed away at his home in Kilifi County following a long battle with cancer. Online users have taken to social media to send their condolences. Maina and King’ang’i expressed their condolences during the morning talk show.
Journalist Fred Obachi Machokaa Mourns the Death of Ted Kalanda
Radio host Fred Obachi Machokaa mourned the death of his long-term friend and comforted his family. He shared,
“I am extremely saddened to learn of the passing on of a music legend and a long-term friend, Ted Kalanda Harrison. He of Them Mushrooms and the hit song Jambo Bwana ruled the airwaves for decades!!!! To my brothers Billy Saro, John Katana and the entire Harrison family, please accept my sincere condolences for this great loss. May Teddy rest in perfect peace and may the Almighty God comfort you all at this very difficult moment,”
Ezekiel Mutua also showered the evergreen band with praises. He took to his Twitter page to pay glowing tribute to the celebrated band.
The Mushroom Band is famous for its music in reggae genres, Bengal and Chakacha. The band gained fame with their 1982 Swahili hit “Jambo Bwana.” The hit in question was recorded in 1980 and earned the band gold, silver and platinum discs following sales that exceeded 200,000.
In 2018, Ted Kalanda took to social media , sharing that he had been confined to a wheel chair and was undergoing therapy. He shared a photo of himself holding a cup of coffee telling his fans that,
“Beautiful people, this is where I am at right now… In a wheelchair and undergoing therapy for the recovery of the use of my legs.”
Ted Kalanda lost his other brothers George Zirto and Dennis Kalume in previous years. He is survived by his remaining two brothers, John Katana Harrison and Billy Sarro.
