Kenya has renewed its pledge to expand access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services across the country after participating in a high-level WASH Ministerial Roundtable held on the sidelines of the 39th African Union Summit.

The Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation, Julius Korir, represented Cabinet Secretary Eng. Eric Mugaa at the forum, which brought together African water ministers and sector leaders.

The meeting was convened by the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) in partnership with the World Bank.

Korir, who was accompanied by Water Secretary Eng. Samuel Alima and other technical officers, said the discussions focused on strengthening governance, improving service delivery and promoting sustainable and resilient water systems across the continent.

He noted that Kenya remains firmly committed to mobilising diversified financing to fast-track the implementation of the WASH Compact, with a strong focus on accountability, value for money and long-term sustainability.

Korir also highlighted the scale of investment needed to achieve universal access. According to the National Water and Sanitation Investment and Financing Strategy (NAWASIP), Kenya requires an estimated KSh 995 billion (about USD 7.6 billion) to provide safe water and sanitation for all by 2030.

He said the government will continue working closely with public institutions, development partners, the private sector and blended finance partners to deliver inclusive and climate-resilient WASH services nationwide.

The roundtable reaffirmed a shared continental commitment to ensuring no African is left behind in access to clean water and sanitation.
