Kenya is seeking to strengthen international cooperation in sustainable mining as the country explores opportunities to attract investment and adopt cleaner technologies in the minerals sector.
Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho said Kenya’s interests were represented at the 28th China Mining Conference and Exhibition in Tianjin, China, where global leaders discussed the future of mining and its role in the energy transition.
Joho participated in the opening ceremony and the ministerial forum on international mining cooperation, which brought together more than 35 ministers and representatives from over 80 nationalities.
The conference is one of the major global platforms for mineral cooperation and has increasingly become a forum for discussions on how the mining sector can support the transition to cleaner energy.
A key focus of the 2026 conference is green mining, with discussions centred on reducing carbon emissions from mining operations and integrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles into the sector.
Joho said the discussions also provided an opportunity for mineral-rich developing countries to explore how they can benefit from China’s experience and technologies in green mineral extraction.
The focus on cleaner mining comes at a time when demand for minerals used in renewable energy technologies and other emerging industries continues to reshape the global mining sector.
For Kenya, greater access to modern extraction technologies could support efforts to develop its mineral resources while addressing environmental concerns associated with mining activities.
The conference also provides a platform for Kenya to engage potential partners on investment, technology transfer and sustainable development of the country’s mining industry.
Joho said the global mining conversation must increasingly focus on ensuring that mineral resources contribute to sustainable economic growth while supporting the wider energy transition.
The discussions in Tianjin are expected to contribute to broader international cooperation on decarbonising mining operations and improving ESG practices as countries seek to balance mineral development with environmental protection.
