President William Ruto has announced a new agreement between Kenya and Italy that will guide how the two countries will work together from 2026 to 2029.

The deal was signed in Rome during his official visit, where he held talks with Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

The agreement, known as the Italy-Kenya Action Plan, focuses on growing trade, creating jobs, improving technology, and strengthening ties between the two countries.

Focus on business and jobs

A big part of the plan is about business. Kenya and Italy want to increase trade and attract more investment.

The two countries agreed to support companies from both sides to work together, especially in areas like infrastructure, agriculture, energy, and manufacturing.

There is also a strong push to improve Kenya’s leather industry so it can compete better in global markets.

Tourism is another key area, with both countries aiming to promote travel and cultural exchange.

Support for development

The agreement also looks at improving food security and supporting farmers, especially in key sectors like coffee.

Kenya and Italy will also work together on projects related to the blue economy, including fishing and ocean resources.

Other areas include better waste management, urban development, and building stronger infrastructure such as roads, energy systems, and communication networks.

Technology and innovation

Technology is another major focus. The two countries plan to work together on innovation, including Artificial Intelligence.

They will also strengthen cooperation in the space sector using the Luigi Broglio Malindi Space Center, which is one of Kenya’s key space facilities.

Education and youth opportunities

The deal also puts emphasis on education and skills.

Both countries want to support Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to help young people gain practical skills.

There will also be more partnerships between universities and opportunities for student exchanges.

Security cooperation

They also signed a defence cooperation deal. This will focus on fighting terrorism and improving maritime security, while Kenya remains in control of its territory.

Bigger picture

The agreement is part of Italy’s wider plan for Africa known as the Mattei Plan for Africa, where Kenya has been named as a key partner.

Both leaders said the partnership is expected to support growth and development in the two countries, with regular reviews planned to track progress.
