The government has started the process of acquiring private land needed for the expansion of the Rironi-Mau Summit section of the A8 highway, with property owners in Kiambu, Nyandarua and Nakuru counties set to be affected.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and the National Land Commission (NLC) announced the compulsory acquisition through a Gazette Notice dated August 28, 2026.
The project is expected to expand the busy highway linking Nairobi with western Kenya and other parts of the country.
According to the notice, about 14.53 hectares of private land will be acquired across the three counties to make room for the road project.
For Kiambu County, 3.89 hectares are to be acquired from such regions as Limuru/Kamirithu, Limuru/Bibironi, Lari/Kirenga and Lari/Magina.
For Nyandarua, about 0.94 hectares in South Kinangop are to be acquired.
Nakuru County will take the biggest portion of the land to be affected, with about 9.70 hectares to be acquired from such places as Longonot/Kijabe, Naivasha/Mwichiringiri, Naivasha/Maraigushu and Naivasha Town.
It should be noted that the land referred to in the notice is privately-owned property, which means that those affected are entitled to compensation after the acquisition process is complete.
Such persons as individual landowners, families, firms, churches, self-help groups and a farmer
Landowners asked to submit claims
The NLC has asked anyone with an interest in the affected parcels to submit a written claim for compensation before their scheduled inquiry date.
Landowners will be required to provide copies of their national identity cards, KRA PIN certificates, ownership documents and bank account details.
Claiming companies are supposed to provide their certificate of incorporation, CR12, company KRA PIN and PIN identification of their directors.
The inquiry will happen from October 13 to October 26 in various chiefs’ dispensation centers in Kiambu, Nyandarua and Naivasha.
At the inquiry, affected residents will get a chance to file their claim, objection and seek clarification regarding the land acquisition process.
This is coming amid ongoing construction work on the Rironi-Mau Summit road project.
The highway is a key road link for people driving through the area going to western Kenya and returning back to Nairobi. The Rironi-Naivasha part of the road is under upgrading.
The Ministry of Transport, just recently, revealed that tarripping on the Rironi-Naivasha stretch of the road will be finished in December 2026 based on the contractor’s statement.
This latest acquisition process will open up room for expansion work on the Rironi-Mau Summit road corridor.
