Motorists using Mombasa Road towards Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) have been warned to expect traffic disruptions after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced a partial closure at the Cabanas-Eastern Bypass off-ramp.
The closure will take effect from Thursday, September 17, and remain in place until Thursday, October 22, 2026, to allow construction of a box drain along the affected section.
KeNHA said the closure will affect the JKIA-bound side of Mombasa Road, particularly motorists joining the road from the Eastern Bypass.
During the construction period, motorists will be directed to use a designated diversion lane to access Mombasa Road.
The authority said traffic marshals will be stationed at the site to guide motorists and help keep traffic moving as the works continue.
“Mmotorists who are intending to access Mombasa Road (bound for JKIA) from Eastern Bypass will divert using the diversion lane provided and the proposed traffic marshals’ directions,” KeNHA stated.
Motorists have also been advised to observe the temporary traffic management plan put in place as well as cooperate with police and traffic marshals at the site.
KeNHA further said that normal traffic operations in the particular stretch will resume after completion of the construction works.
This closure follows efforts made by the authority to continue carrying out maintenance and rehabilitation projects in Nairobi and surrounding counties.
On the previous day, a KeNHA team carried out road inspection in various road stretches within Kiambu County in order to check their condition, progress in on-going works and to identify other areas that need more attention.
This inspection exercise was spearheaded by Nairobi Regional Director Francis Kimata to include Muthaiga-Kiambu, Kiambu-Limuru, Ndenderu-Kamandura and Ruaka-Ndenderu-Gitaru Western Bypass road stretches.
Road lighting, carriageway maintenance, drainage, vegetation control and rehabilitation of worn-out road stretches in collaboration with Kiambu County Government were among the activities assessed.
