Kenafric Industries has moved to clarify the circumstances surrounding its recent repossession of land in Nairobi’s Baba Dogo area, following public outcry over the closure of a space popularly used as a football ground and community hub.

The land, which was reclaimed on June 13, has long been referred to informally as the “Baba Dogo football grounds” and has served as a venue for youth sporting events and informal trade. However, Kenafric insists that it is the rightful and registered owner of the property—Land Reference Number 336/109—under a leasehold granted in 1996 and extended in 2004. The title is currently held by Kenafric Properties Limited, following a transfer in 2014.

The company says the repossession followed a legal battle concluded in its favour by the Environment and Land Court in Case ELCE093 of 2023. Kenafric Group Managing Director Kirtan Shah emphasized that all legal procedures, including advance notice and consultations with local leaders, were observed ahead of the operation.

“We fully recognise the emotional value this site held for many, especially young people who found purpose and a sense of belonging through community activities held there,” Shah said in a statement.

He dismissed allegations of land grabbing as “inaccurate and unfair,” underscoring that the court had affirmed Kenafric’s ownership.

“This was not an act of hostility or disregard for the community,” he added.

Despite the dispute, the company reiterated its commitment to supporting local communities, vowing to continue engaging positively with stakeholders in the area.

Kenafric is one of Kenya’s leading manufacturers and has over the years engaged in several community development initiatives across Nairobi and beyond.
