The Kenya Defence Forces is increasingly turning to community-driven approaches to complement security operations, with a recent football match in Tot, Elgeyo-Marakwet, emerging as a powerful symbol of that shift.

Under Operation Maliza Uhalifu, KDF troops faced off with local side Tot FC in a friendly but spirited match on Saturday that drew large crowds and transformed the dusty pitch into a space of unity, interaction and shared purpose.

Residents turned up in numbers, cheering both teams in an atmosphere that went beyond sport. For many, it was a rare and meaningful opportunity to engage directly with security personnel outside the usual tension associated with operations in the region.

KDF commanders present in the area of responsibility used the event to reaffirm the military’s commitment to Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC), which is now playing a central role in stabilisation efforts in parts of the North Rift.

On the pitch, Tot FC edged out Todo FC 4–2 in an entertaining contest, but the real victory was off the field. The match created space for dialogue, eased tensions and strengthened trust between soldiers and the community.

Defence officials say such engagements are deliberate. By meeting communities in everyday settings like sports, KDF is working to break down barriers, build confidence and position itself not just as a security provider, but as a partner in local development.

The initiative highlights a broader shift within the Ministry of Defence towards people-centred security interventions—where winning public trust is seen as just as critical as restoring order.

As Operation Maliza Uhalifu continues across parts of the North Rift, including neighbouring Baringo County, KDF’s approach is increasingly blending firmness with outreach—an approach officials believe is key to achieving lasting peace.

In Tot, football did more than entertain. It brought people together, strengthened bonds and sent a clear message: security and community go hand in hand.
