The Judicial Service Commission shortlisted five candidates for the position of judge of the Supreme Court following an application process that attracted six applicants. The vacancy arose after the death of Justice Ibrahim Mohammed, prompting the commission to advertise the position on January 28, 2026.

According to JSC secretary Winfridah Mokaya, the applications were reviewed for compliance with the set requirements, with five candidates meeting the threshold for shortlisting. Those selected include Anne Waceke Kiratu Makori, Justice Joseph Kipchumba Kigen Katwa, Justice Joseph Kiplagat Sergon, Justice Francis Kipruto Tuiyott, and Justice Warsame Abdulahi Mohammed.

The commission announced that interviews for the shortlisted candidates will be conducted on April 28 and April 29, 2026. The sessions will be held at different times across the two days, as the JSC moves forward with the process of filling the high-profile judicial position.

Katwa Kigen rose to international prominence as a key member of the legal team that defended President William Ruto (then Deputy President) and broadcaster Joshua Sang at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.
