The Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital, a 750-bed Level 6 facility located in Lurambi Sub-County is expected to be completed by December 2026, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said.
This multi, billion, shilling project had been halted for over four years, which raised public concern as the abandoned building was deteriorating. The deadlock was lifted when the County Government with the support of President William Ruto’s administration, formally handed over the project to the national government.
This enabled Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) engineers to get back to work on the construction.
PS Omollo said that the move helped to revive one of Western Kenya’s major health infrastructure projects that had been delayed for a long time.
Besides serving as a referral centre for the whole region, the hospital will offer different specialised medical services. It will include an oncology centre that’s provided with radiotherapy bunkers and linear accelerators, a maternal and neonatal wing with theatres, delivery suites and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) services, as well as critical care and renal units providing haemodialysis, ICU services and blood banking.
The hospital will also have a 24-hour emergency and diagnostics block that’s expected to enhance the region’s capacity to handle urgent care. Apart from these, a commercial public plaza is planned to be integrated with the hospital to support patients and their families accessing the services.
Besides delivering health care, the hospital will be a key medical training centre. Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology and other health training institutions will use it for capacity, building of healthcare workers in the region.
The facility is expected to offer more than 5, 000 jobs to both clinical and non, clinical personnel, thereby A lot boosting the local health economy.
To facilitate performance and foster responsibility, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is in charge of security of the site, coordination among various agencies, and protection of critical infrastructure.
This management will help to ensure the safety of equipment, continuous construction, as well as accountability as the project progresses towards completion.
