Information, Communications and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo has held talks with a delegation from the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) to explore collaboration on Kenya’s digital transformation and the expansion of connectivity across Africa.
The meeting, held at Telposta Towers, brought together Kabogo and a GSMA delegation led by Sarah Wiggin, the association’s Vice President of Sales, to discuss cooperation in the communications sector, digital innovation and opportunities to strengthen Africa’s participation in the global digital economy.
Kabogo said the Ministry was committed to working with GSMA to develop a coordinated roadmap that would showcase Kenya’s digital achievements, innovations and investment opportunities.
He noted that collaboration between the government and industry stakeholders would be important in advancing connectivity, promoting digital inclusion and strengthening regional cooperation.
The discussions also focused on key issues affecting the communications sector and the need to mobilise participation from across the continent to accelerate digital transformation.
GSMA’s delegation included Angela Wamola, Head of Africa; Caroline Mbugua, Senior Director for Public Policy in Africa; and Linus Melly.
The meeting comes amid growing efforts across African countries to expand digital infrastructure, improve access to communications services and create opportunities for businesses and citizens to participate in the digital economy.
Improved connectivity is considered an important foundation for expanding access to digital services, supporting innovation and enabling businesses to reach wider markets. However, differences in infrastructure coverage, affordability and digital skills remain among the challenges facing digital inclusion across the continent.
Through the proposed collaboration, Kenya and GSMA intend to identify opportunities to promote the country’s digital progress while supporting broader regional initiatives on connectivity and inclusion.
Also present at the meeting were Communications Authority of Kenya Director General David Mugonyi and Secretary for Information Temesi Mukani.
The engagement highlights the Ministry’s efforts to work with industry organisations and communications-sector stakeholders in advancing Kenya’s digital economy and strengthening cooperation with partners across Africa.
