The Judiciary of Kenya has appealed to Parliament to increase funding allocations to support the institution’s preparedness for the upcoming General Election and improve access to justice.

Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Winfridah Mokaya made the appeal during an engagement with the Judiciary Legal Affairs Committee on the processing of the 2026/2027 financial year budget estimates.

Mokaya said the Judiciary continues to face a funding gap that is affecting effective delivery of justice and implementation of critical operations across the institution.

She emphasized the importance of adequate financial support in enabling the Judiciary to fulfill its constitutional mandate, especially as the country prepares for the next General Election.

According to the Chief Registrar, the proposed budget prioritizes election preparedness activities, including support for the Judiciary Elections Committee and the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal ahead of the polls.

Other priority areas include the establishment and operationalisation of new courts, facilitation of newly recruited judges and magistrates, onboarding of new tribunals, and strengthening ICT services within the Judiciary.

Mokaya noted that the investments are necessary to help the Judiciary handle the expected increase in election-related disputes while continuing efforts to reduce case backlog and improve service delivery.

She was accompanied by senior Judiciary officials including the Director of Finance, the Registrar of the High Court, the Registrar of the Magistrates’ Court, and other members of the Judiciary management team during the engagement.
