Head of Creative Economy and Special Projects Dennis Itumbi have announced a sweeping crackdown on digital piracy in Kenya. The move is unveiled for immediate closure due to the illegally distributing copyrighted content.

Itumbi stated the crackdown might be unpopular with many Kenyans who rely on these platforms, as some closures will affect many and also it’s also a threat to Kenya’s creative economy.

The targeted platforms include Goojara, 123 movies and Cineb.gg, which are set to be shut down, including ftmov.co and streammx.sh. “The run to save my job is still on course and in 14 days it will be achieved,” said Itumbi.

Speaking at a government innovation forum, Itumbi said that piracy is not just legal violation but a direct assault on Kenya’s creative economy, emphasizing that artists, producers and innovators lose millions of shillings annually to illegal downloads and streaming platforms.

This follows a crackdown, research and consultation that he focused on documentation and listening to industry stakeholders after receiving requests from individuals wanting to create a working balanced policy with direct action.

The initiative is collaborating with Communication Authority of Kenya and the Ministry of ICT to help identify the illegal sites.
