The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has held talks with a panel of experts working on compensation for victims of human rights violations, including people affected by demonstrations and public protests.

The meeting brought together the Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations, led by its chairperson, Prof. Makau Mutua, and IPOA officials led by Chairperson Dr Duncan Ojwang’ Oburu.

Discussions focused on accountability, compensation and justice for victims of human rights violations.

During the meeting, Oburu said IPOA would support the compensation process by providing relevant data, investigative assistance and working with the panel.

Mutua acknowledged the authority’s role, noting that although compensation cannot reverse the harm suffered by victims, it is an important part of efforts to achieve justice and national healing.

After the meeting, members of the panel, accompanied by IPOA Assistant Director of Investigations Irene Inoti and officials from the authority’s Corporate Communications Division, visited families and individuals affected by the violations.

The delegation visited the mother of the late Rex Masai in Kayole, Nigel Oduor Otieno in Mathare and Brian Mwangi Wangari in Ruiru.

The purpose of these visits was to listen and recognize the experience of those who have been affected by these acts as the panel continues its work on compensation and reparations.

IPOA stated that it will continue to cooperate with relevant organizations in investigating complaints against the police officers, as well as cases where there is human rights violation.

The organization also reaffirmed its dedication to ensure that such violations are prevented in the future.
