The redevelopment of Homa Bay Pier is moving closer to completion, with Phase II of the project making significant progress as the government intensifies efforts to unlock economic opportunities within the Blue Economy sector.

Led by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), the initiative is expected to transform the lakeside facility into a key transport and trade hub along Lake Victoria.

A major component of the project is the construction of a modern ferry ramp designed to facilitate efficient roll-on/roll-off ferry operations. The works, which are being supervised by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), also include new terminal buildings, warehouses, a ferry waiting bay and a permanent administrative block. Most of the structural construction has already been completed, with crews currently focusing on wiring, painting and landscaping works.

Once operational, the upgraded facility will strengthen connectivity between Homa Bay and several destinations around Lake Victoria, including Kisumu, Mbita, Siaya, Busia and Migori, as well as islands such as Mfangano. The project is also expected to boost cross-border trade by improving access to regional ports in Uganda, including Entebbe and Jinja, and Mwanza in Tanzania.

The government is also enhancing security measures around the port ahead of its commissioning. Through the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, authorities are coordinating maritime security operations and working with local agencies to ensure safe, efficient and orderly movement of passengers and goods through the modernised facility.
