Have to Win 17 out of 18, Why Manchester City Will not Catch Up With Arsenal

Arsenal’s long wait for a Premier League crown may finally be nearing its conclusion, with the mathematics of the title race increasingly tilting in the Gunners’ favour as the season enters its decisive phase.

After 22 years without lifting the league trophy, Arsenal have put themselves in a commanding position thanks to a strong first half of the campaign. With 60 points already contested, Mikel Arteta’s side has collected 48, leaving them firmly on course for the benchmark traditionally required to win the title.

In a 38-match season, a total of 114 points are available. History suggests that champions typically need at least 90 points to secure the title. Arsenal’s target, therefore, is 91 points or more. Having already amassed 48, the North London side requires just 43 additional points from their remaining 18 fixtures.

That equation leaves Arsenal with a relatively clear path. Of the 54 points still available, they can afford to drop a maximum of 12 and still reach the title-winning threshold. With only 12 points dropped so far this season, Arsenal’s margin for error remains slim but manageable.

Put simply, Arsenal need to win at least 14 of their remaining 18 matches and draw one more to stay on track. That scenario would still allow for up to three defeats between now and the end of the season — a demanding but realistic challenge given their current form.

The pressure, however, is even greater on their closest rivals. The nearest challengers, sitting on 42 points, face a far steeper climb. To surpass Arsenal’s projected total of 91 points, they would need to win at least 17 of their remaining 18 matches to reach 93 points — a near-perfect run that leaves little room for mistakes.

One fixture, in particular, could prove decisive. Arsenal’s trip to face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium is shaping up to be a pivotal moment in the title race. A positive result there would not only boost Arsenal’s points tally but also directly dent the ambitions of one of their biggest competitors.

As the numbers stand, 15 wins from the remaining matches would all but seal the title for Arsenal, regardless of results elsewhere. If they maintain their current consistency, the Emirates Stadium could finally become home to the Premier League trophy once again.

For Arsenal supporters who have waited more than two decades, the mathematics suggest that this season could mark the end of a very long drought.
