The government has initiated a clampdown on the Kisii County metroarea for ‘unruly’ boda boda drivers who are, reportedly, politically interfering to harass local rivals
The Boda Boda groups’ modus operandi is intimidation through violence, and this was what Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen refuted vehemently in his address during the Jukwaa La Usalama security conference held in Kisii Town on Friday.
The CS was categorical that the perpetuation of violence was wholly responsible for this deplorable conduct of life in the region. Murkomen narrated that the biggest violence trigger in Gusii is land succession disputes, noting while several cases of lynching for witchcraft had been identified, the people affected were mostly elderly victims of land grabs.
He stated that the incidents are a form of crime and, thus, must be eliminated. Besides, the CS specified the haze of drugs and unlicensed brews as reasons behind hard times with the law, and he promised, among other things, that the fight would be intensified.
However, Murkomen broke the news that a police station commander in Migori was arrested after appearing drunk during a security meeting last Thursday. The officer is currently undergoing an assessment at Migori County Hospital to determine if it is a case of indiscipline or mental health concerns.
CS said that oversight in the police force leading to drunkenness would never be allowed, stressing that law enforcers must set an example by leading with discipline and being professional.
The Kisii security forum is part of a Jukwaa La Usalama series, a national program that is implemented through door-to-door visits and public discussions with citizens and security personnel, aimed at improving community security in Kisii region.
