Kenyans who suffered injuries, lost relatives or experienced other human rights violations during demonstrations and public protests have until November 14, 2026, to submit claims for compensation.

The Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations has issued a fresh reminder as it announced that it had processed 157 additional claims worth KSh96.95 million under Phase VII of the compensation programme.

In a statement released on Thursday, November 5, the panel, chaired by Professor Makau Mutua, said the latest phase covers both civilians and uniformed officers who suffered human rights violations.

The compensation varies depending on the nature and severity of the harm suffered.

Families of people who died will receive KSh3 million, while victims who sustained severe injuries have been allocated KSh1 million each.

Those who suffered moderate injuries will receive KSh500,000, while victims with minor injuries will receive KSh50,000.

The panel also approved compensation for aggravated injuries, with affected individuals set to receive between KSh1.5 million and KSh2.5 million depending on the severity of their injuries.

Eleven claims involving economic losses were also included, with each claimant allocated KSh50,000.

The latest announcement brings the compensation programme’s reported payments to more than KSh1 billion.

According to the panel, KSh1.014 billion had already been paid to 1,083 verified protest victims and 100 affected uniformed officers under the earlier phases of the programme.

The panel said it would continue receiving and processing claims through its official channels but warned that it would stop accepting new applications on November 14.

“Victims who have not yet submitted their claims are urged to do so before the deadline,” the panel stated.

It further explained that every application would undergo strict verification and authentication before a decision is made.

“Every claim received shall undergo strict verification and authentication before a decision is reached and notification to each claimant of the outcome shall be provided within a reasonable time,” the statement added.

The panel also said it was engaging victims, their families and beneficiaries directly to address concerns and provide updates on their applications.

Those seeking assistance can visit the panel’s offices on the ground floor of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.

Applicants can also reach the panel through its hotline, 0141 441 294, or email info@victimscompensation.go.ke.

The offices are open from Monday to Friday between 8 am and 5 pm.

The compensation programme was established to address human rights violations arising from demonstrations and public protests, with the government previously setting aside KSh2 billion for the exercise.
