President William Ruto’s administration has taken a major step towards fulfilling its pledge to redesign the Nithi Bridge.

This is following The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) launch of a public consultation process on the project.

KeNHA officially began gathering public views on the proposed realignment and construction works along the Embu–Meru (A9) Road, a key transport corridor in the region.

During an engagement forum with residents, officials revealed that the redesigned alignment will cover approximately 2.7 kilometres, featuring an 880-metre bridge structure.

The road will include an eight-metre carriageway and two-metre pedestrian walkways on both sides.

“To enhance safety and improve geometric standards, the new design adopts a maximum gradient of eight per cent along the approach sections. This adjustment aims to moderate the existing steep slopes and sharp horizontal curves,” KeNHA said in the update.

The bridge deck itself will maintain a gentler gradient of 1.16 per cent, improving ride quality and vehicular stability.

Once completed, the structure will rise nearly 100 metres above the valley floor, positioning it as a standout engineering landmark and potential tourist attraction in East and Central Africa.

KeNHA says the revised alignment and moderated gradients will significantly enhance geometric standards, boost road safety, and ensure smoother traffic flow along the busy A9 corridor, which serves as a vital link between major counties in the region.
