The government has stepped up efforts to expand affordable housing at Konza Technopolis, with construction of the Konza Affordable Housing Project progressing steadily as part of the national housing agenda.

The project, being implemented under the Boma Yangu Programme, is intended to meet the housing needs of residents working and studying within Konza Technopolis, one of Africa’s leading smart cities and technology hubs.

According to Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, Phase I of the development comprises 11 residential blocks and will deliver 1,042 housing units, including both Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) and market-rate units.

‘The Konza Affordable Housing master plan targets the development of 10,000 housing units,” he said in a statement.

The housing units are designed to serve technology professionals, students and workers within the rapidly growing innovation city. Residents will also benefit from modern amenities such as borehole water supply, 24-hour backup power, integrated ICT connectivity, enhanced security systems, cabro-paved roads, recreational facilities, green spaces and commercial areas within selected blocks.

Construction has reached an advanced stage, with finishing works including tiling, painting and terrazzo installation currently underway.

Beyond addressing housing demand, the project is also creating employment opportunities for local communities. More than 500 workers are currently engaged on site, with youth and women accounting for a significant share of the workforce. The initiative is helping equip local residents with valuable construction skills while contributing to economic growth in the region.

Following the progress recorded under Phase I, construction of Phase II has already commenced. The second phase is expected to add 2,000 housing units and will include key social amenities such as a primary school, secondary school and hospital to support the growing population.

The broader Konza Affordable Housing master plan targets the development of 10,000 housing units, reinforcing the government’s commitment to providing decent and affordable housing while supporting the growth of Konza as a world-class smart city.

Dr. Omollo said the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration will continue working with relevant government agencies and stakeholders to provide a secure environment and facilitate the timely implementation of the transformative project.
