Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has kicked off a two-month tour of the United States in what is being seen as part of the opposition’s growing efforts to court the diaspora and the international community ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking in Nairobi before his departure on Tuesday, July 9, Gachagua said the trip will include meetings with Kenyans living abroad, American investors, and thought leaders across several major cities.

“Tonight, I travel to the United States to engage Kenyans in the diaspora and share with the international community the real state of the nation,” said Gachagua, who now leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

The former DP is expected to hold town hall meetings and social gatherings in Dallas, California, Seattle, Boston, and Baltimore — cities known for hosting large and politically engaged Kenyan communities.

Though framed as an outreach tour, analysts say the timing and scope of Gachagua’s trip are far from ordinary.

“This isn’t just about listening to Kenyans abroad. It’s about laying groundwork for 2027,” noted a political analyst. “It signals that the opposition is organizing early, internationally and domestically.”

Insider sources revealed that Gachagua is set to meet American investors who have expressed interest in partnering with opposition leaders, particularly on issues of youth employment, innovation, and accountability.

The trip comes just days after former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i — another key opposition figure — launched his own diaspora engagement drive in Texas, underscoring a coordinated push by opposition heavyweights to internationalize their campaigns and amplify their credibility on the global stage.
