Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has congratulated Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama following his election as President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
In a statement issued after the announcement of the results, Gachagua also extended his congratulations to members of the LSK Council elected alongside Kanjama to steer the lawyers’ body.
“Your record on fidelity to the Constitution and respect for the rule of law must have persuaded your learned friends that you are the best man for the job at a time like this one,” Gachagua said.
The former Deputy President used the message to criticise the government, accusing it of violating the Constitution with impunity and undermining the rule of law.
He expressed hope that under Kanjama’s leadership, LSK would take a firm stand in defending the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and ensuring strict observance of the rule of law.
Gachagua further urged the lawyers’ body to lead efforts in safeguarding national assets from what he termed as arbitrary sales without public participation, and to actively challenge alleged misuse of public funds.
He also called on LSK to play a central role in keeping the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) accountable ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“Kenyans are optimistic that LSK will lead in keeping the IEBC on its toes to ensure a free, fair, credible and verifiable 2027 General Election,” he said.
