Five people have died following a head-on collision involving an Easy Coach bus and a Toyota IST at Kikopey along the Gilgil-Nakuru Highway.

The fatal crash occurred at around 11pm on Sunday, September 13, when the bus, which was travelling from Gilgil towards Nakuru, collided with the private vehicle.

Four occupants of the Toyota IST, including two women and two juveniles, died at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the private car was critically injured and rushed to Gilgil Hospital, where he later succumbed while receiving treatment, bringing the death toll to five. Several other passengers sustained injuries in the crash and were taken to hospital for medical attention.

Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Winston Mwakio confirmed the incident and said officers had launched investigations to establish what caused the collision. The crash has once again raised concern over road safety in the Kikopey area, which has recorded several fatal accidents in recent years.

In January, five people died on the spot after a 14-seater matatu collided with a trailer in the area, only three days into the new year. The area also witnessed another deadly crash in September 2025, when 16 people died after a 14-passenger matatu reportedly collided head-on with a trailer while attempting to overtake near Kariandusi.

Thirteen victims died at the scene, while three others later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. The latest accident adds to growing concerns over road safety along the busy highway, with calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and safety measures.
