A drug trafficker suspect was arrested on Monday, just a few hours after he disappeared from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), leaving behind two suitcases containing cannabis.
Wong Hiu Fung, 57, arrived in Nairobi from Bangkok and went through the immigration process without raising alarm.
Officers stated that Wong picked up his bags, but just as they started screening, he pretended to take a phone call and then quietly escaped, leaving the luggage containing cannabis behind.
Police became suspicious of the abandoned suitcases. They found 41 sachets of cannabis sativa that weighed nearly 42 kilograms. The drugs had been carefully packed and hidden.
Officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit launched a manhunt, using surveillance footage and other leads to trace him to a hotel in South C. He was arrested there and taken back to JKIA Police Station, where he’s being held.
He’s expected in court as police continue investigating whether he was working alone or had help.
