Homicide detectives on Friday returned to Kwa Binzaro to prepare for the exhumation of eight graves found last month.

But while mapping out the site, they stumbled on even more disturbing discoveries. Thirteen additional graves were spotted in different parts of the five-acre piece of land now under investigation.

Kwa Binzaro sits close to Shakahola, where a cult-related massacre claimed the lives of more than 400 people, most of them children.

The new findings have pushed the death toll in Kwa Binzaro to 11 so far.

In some graves, human bones were visible, likely unearthed by wild animals. Investigators suspect starvation could be the cause of death, echoing what happened in Shakahola.

Unlike in Shakahola, however, the graves here were hidden deeper in the bushes, making them harder to trace.

Detectives, led by Homicide Director Martin Nyuguto, said the latest discoveries were guided by confessions from suspects arrested in the area.

Police also suspect that other suspects are still on the run. Relatives of missing persons are in turn being summoned to come forward and provide DNA samples to help identify the bodies when they are exhumed.

The victims are believed to have been followers of Good News International, the cult linked to preacher Paul Mckenzie, who is accused of masterminding the massacre in Shakahola.
