Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya has led the nation in mourning two Kenya Air Force pilots who tragically lost their lives on Saturday following a plane crash in Kwale County.
The fatal incident involved a Kenya Air Force (KAF) Grob 120A aircraft that was on a routine training flight when it experienced an emergency and crashed near Mwakijembe Primary School in Mafundani village. Both pilots on board perished in the accident.
In a heartfelt condolence message to the families and colleagues of the deceased airmen, CS Tuya described the pilots as brave and dedicated officers who died in the line of duty.”My heartfelt condolences to the families, relatives, and all colleagues of our two gallant Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers who lost their lives in yesterday’s accident involving a Kenya Air Force Grob 120A aircraft,” said CS Tuya. “As the Ministry of Defence (MOD) family, we will stand together during this difficult period of mourning our departed colleagues.”
According to a statement by the Kenya Defence Forces, the aircraft encountered an emergency during the training flight, resulting in the fatal crash. The KDF confirmed the loss of both pilots and assured the public that investigations into the cause of the crash have already begun.“With deep sadness, we confirm the passing of both pilots in the crash.
Kenya Air Force has constituted and dispatched investigation teams to establish the cause of the air crash,” read the KDF statement.
The crash site, located in a rural part of Kwale County, was immediately secured by security personnel to allow for rescue and recovery operations, followed by a technical investigation into the cause of the incident.
The Kenya Defence Forces also conveyed their prayers and support to the families of the fallen officers, stating, “May the Almighty Lord rest the souls of the departed heroes in peace and grant their families fortitude at this time of deep sorrow.” Further details on the identities of the pilots and findings from the investigation are expected in due course.
