The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has issued a stern warning to students across Kenya, cautioning that involvement in criminal activities could have lasting consequences that extend well beyond their school years.

The advisory, shared by Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, highlighted the potential impact of criminal records on future employment and personal ambitions.

According to the DCI, records of offences involving students from primary schools, secondary schools, colleges and universities are being archived and consolidated. The agency warned that any learner found engaging in criminal conduct could have those records reflected when applying for a Police Clearance Certificate, commonly known as a Certificate of Good Conduct, in the future.

Investigators noted that a criminal record could become a significant barrier when seeking employment, as many organisations consider a clean certificate of good conduct an important requirement. The agency urged students to avoid unlawful activities, including violent demonstrations, arson, drug-related offences, cyberbullying, assault, public drunkenness and other criminal acts that may attract prosecution.

The warning comes amid growing concern over student involvement in cases of school unrest reported across the country. Authorities have recently linked learners to several incidents, including deadly school fires and coordinated acts of destruction. The DCI called on parents, teachers, religious leaders and guardians to guide young people and help keep them away from criminal activities that could negatively affect their futures.
