Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested Ian Mahad, also known as Suleiman, for allegedly stealing mobile phones from unsuspecting pedestrians in the Bamburi, Nyali, and Kadzandani areas of Mombasa.

In a statement released on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, the DCI revealed that Mahad was apprehended at a motorcycle shop in Mombasa’s central business district while attempting to purchase a new bike. His arrest followed an incident on Saturday when enraged locals set fire to his previous motorcycle after he had used it in a theft spree.

Mahad is accused of snatching mobile phones from people along Mombasa’s busy streets and then fleeing on his motorbike.

As part of the ongoing investigation, officers also conducted an operation in the Kadzandani Primary School area, where they recovered a Honda motorcycle with registration number KMGG 228X, an Oppo mobile phone, and other stolen items. However, some of Mahad’s accomplices managed to evade arrest.

The suspect is currently in police custody, where he is being processed ahead of his arraignment, as detectives continue to search for the other individuals involved.
