The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested comedian and activist Erick Omondi in connection with alleged criminal offences committed during recent fuel-related protests in Nairobi.

Following credible intelligence implicating him in the fuel protests, Omondi was arrested on June 5th 2026 at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), the DCI said in a statement.

Through a combined effort of detectives from DCI Central and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) Nairobi Region carried out the arrest.

Omondi reportedly is giving a statement at the DCI Nairobi Region Headquarters as the police prepare his court documentation for presentation.

This development comes in the backdrop of the DCI continuing to investigate the fuel protests that have really gripped the attention of the public due to the rising prices of fuel and other commodities. The DCI mentioned that they’ve apprehended many other suspects linked with the same incidents who were brought to court on May 18, 2026.

In a statement, the investigative agency reiterated that while the Constitution guarantees citizens the right to assemble, picket and demonstrate peacefully, such rights must be exercised within the law.

DCI also issued a caution that any acts of crime committed under the disguise of protests, demonstrations, or civic actions will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.

“The DCI shall not hesitate to take firm measures against anyone involved in these offences. Wherever you run to hide, the law will eventually find you, ” the agency commented.

Such an arrest might work as a flashpoint between the two camps of supporters and critics as authorities delve further into the fuel protest cases.
