Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Eng. Eric Mugaa has assured lawmakers that the government is taking steps to ensure adequate water supply along the Turkwel–Lokichar corridor as Kenya prepares for crude oil production and pipeline construction.
Mugaa appeared before a joint sitting of the National Assembly and Senate energy committees, co-chaired by Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga and Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria, where he was questioned on whether existing water infrastructure can meet the demands of the oil project.
The CS said the ministry is reviewing current systems and planning new water projects to support oil operations, pipeline works, and related facilities in the region.
He noted that access to water is critical not only for industrial activity but also for local communities living along the corridor, many of whom already face water shortages.
Lawmakers pressed the ministry to ensure that water development keeps pace with the oil sector and does not leave host communities behind. They also called for clear timelines and accountability in project implementation.
The Turkwel–Lokichar corridor is a key part of Kenya’s oil export plan, linking Turkana’s oil fields to the coast. The outcome of the discussions is expected to shape how the government balances energy development with water security in the region.
