Former Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir (now Roads and Transport CS) has today handed over KETRACO infrastructure to newly appointed Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi.

The handing over took place during an infrastructure tour at KETRACO Isinya Substation.

The CS noted this Isinya substation was his first visit since his appointment and assured that he will visit other KETRACO substations so as to fully appreciate the investments that have gone into such projects.

Wandayi said that despite the challenges that the sector is facing, he remains optimistic about the projected expansion of Kenya’s transmission infrastructure.

“We appreciate the challenges that could still be there. There has been slow progress with the speed of implementation of these projects, the biggest challenge we are facing is financing. If we work together, we will be able to enhance our velocity for us to realize the potential of the country in terms of energy and transmission and eventually the cost to the consumer in the shortest time possible,” said the CS.

Isinya substation comes as a relief to consumers in Nairobi and Mombasa who have over the years been inconvenienced by frequent power disruptions.

The 220/ 400kV substation located in Kajiado County is the second biggest sub-station after Suswa and is connected to the Olkaria geothermal fields through the Suswa substation. The substation has a capacity of 1,000megawatts with 400megawats already connected.

Also present during the tour was KETRACO General Manager Systems Operations and Power Management, Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias.
