On Sunday, Dr. Zhou Pingjian, China’s Ambassador to Kenya, hosted a reception in Nairobi to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

The event, held at the Chinese Embassy, attracted an impressive array of attendees, including Kenyan Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, heads of various diplomatic missions, leaders from multiple sectors, and members of Kenya’s Chinese community.

During the reception, Ambassador Zhou reflected on China’s remarkable transformation, detailing how the country evolved from a struggling economy in 1949 to becoming the world’s second-largest economy. He emphasized that, beyond economic strength, China has prioritized lifting its citizens out of poverty and maintaining stability.

The ambassador expressed optimism for the future of China-Kenya relations, pledging to enhance cooperation between the two nations. As the world turns to China for insights on rapid development, Zhou reminded guests of his country’s extraordinary journey.

“In just a few decades, we’ve transformed from a poor, backward country into a moderately prosperous society,” he stated, highlighting China’s leadership in global trade, manufacturing, and renewable energy.

One of China’s most significant achievements, as noted by Zhou, is the eradication of absolute poverty. The nation’s extensive efforts have lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty and resulted in the world’s largest social security, education, and healthcare systems.

With modernization at its core, China remains committed to prioritizing its citizens’ well-being while pursuing technological advancements that benefit the global community. The ambassador’s remarks underscored China’s ongoing focus on modernization and stability, aiming to bring certainty to a world marked by increasing unpredictability.

Zhou highlighted China’s commitment to peaceful development and fostering global cooperation, emphasizing the significance of Africa in China’s foreign policy. He reiterated that building solidarity with African nations is a cornerstone of China’s international relations.

Referencing the recent Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in Beijing, Zhou noted that the outcomes of this summit would greatly benefit African nations that maintain diplomatic ties with China. He indicated that these results would shape the future of China-Africa relations, propelling modernization efforts on both sides.

For Kenya, this signifies a strengthened bond with Beijing. Zhou expressed China’s readiness to collaborate closely with Kenya in implementing the FOCAC outcomes, contributing to the establishment of an “all-weather” China-Africa community with a shared future.

This commitment to China-Africa cooperation reflects China’s long-term vision for mutual benefit and prosperity.

Ambassador Zhou spoke candidly about the special relationship between China and Kenya, stating, “China and Kenya share a profound tradition of friendship.”

The China-Kenya partnership extends beyond diplomacy, encompassing areas like the digital economy and agriculture, aimed at creating tangible changes on the ground.

“We should be sincere partners, firmly supporting one another in safeguarding national sovereignty and choosing independent development paths,” Zhou added, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and cooperation between the two nations.

His remarks point toward a future where China and Kenya continue to benefit from one another, establishing a hub for connectivity and growth in East Africa.
