Carolyne Waithera DeMathew, widow of legendary Kikuyu Benga musician John DeMathew, led family and fans in commemorating the seventh anniversary of his death.
John DeMathew died on August 18, 2019, in a road accident along Thika Superhighway while returning from a fundraiser in Murang’a County.
“Exactly 7 years today…continue resting in peace, Legend,” she wrote.
At his death, a post-mortem examination confirmed he died from severe internal injuries and fractured ribs sustained in the crash.
He left a catalogue of more than 50 albums and was celebrated by fans as a “prophet” for the layered cultural, logical and social messages woven into his music. He left behind two wives, Sarafina Wairimu and Carolyne Waithera and seven children.
Since DeMathew passing, Carolyne has remained a visible figure, keeping his legacy alive, by participating in memorial events and cultural festivals honoring his music.
In April 2026, Carolyne announced her engagement to a new partner, a step that sparked mixed reactions, with fans congratulating her for finding happiness and sharing videos of romantic getaways with her partner.
DeMathew is known for his classic music like “Mwigatho wa Nyumba,” “Njeri,” among others. His songs often carried coded warnings and reflections on politics, morality and community life, inspiring and guiding younger artists, ensuring continuity in Kikuyu Benga music.
