The Boda Boda Association of Kenya has spoken out firmly against allegations that youth who attended President William Ruto’s recent youth empowerment forum at State House, Nairobi, left empty-handed.

In a statement released Monday, Association President Kelvin Mmbadi dismissed the viral social media claims as false and politically motivated, urging Kenyans not to be misled by online misinformation.

“There were fewer than 200 motorcycles available that day, yet over 6,000 riders attended the forum,” Mmbadi clarified. “It was never the plan that everyone would receive a bike.”

He explained that prior to the State House visit, the association’s grassroots groups had already held meetings and selected specific beneficiaries.

The names of those chosen were submitted in advance, and only those individuals received motorcycles at the event.

“Let me be clear the process was transparent,” Mmbadi said. “Riders agreed on who would benefit. Those whose names were submitted received the motorcycles as planned.”

The activity, which was held on August 13, had the objective of enhancing the livelihoods of young people through President Ruto’s broader economic empowerment policy.

It was, however, rapidly criticized after some of the people who attended and social media users complained that motorcycles showcased during the activity were not awarded.

Some claimed the handover was a “publicity stunt,” with accusations that the motorcycles were later taken away or given to politically connected individuals.

But government officials were quick to respond. Dennis Itumbi, Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy, emphasized that the motorcycles were distributed through structured groups, not to individuals.

“Only group chairpersons were authorized to collect the motorcycles on behalf of their members. That was the official process,” said Itumbi. “Let’s not allow lies to discredit real progress. We’re already planning another phase of this empowerment drive.”

State House Director of Public Communication Gerald Bitok also praised the initiative, sharing images of grateful youth leaving State House after the event.

“Another batch of Boda Boda Empowerment Programme units courtesy of President William Ruto leaves State House,” Bitok posted, adding that many riders were seen celebrating and thanking the president for standing with the hustlers.

As the dust settles, the Boda Boda Association is calling for calm and unity among riders, urging them to focus on the bigger picture sustained empowerment through organized structures and fair processes.

“This is just the beginning,” Mmbadi said. “We will continue to work closely with the government to ensure every deserving youth has a chance to uplift themselves.”
