President William Ruto has announced Ksh1.2 billion for the construction of a new university in Emurua Dikirr, Narok County, while promising a major upgrade of a road linking the area to the wider South Rift.
Ruto made the announcements on Wednesday, August 26, during the handover of the Mamboleo Modern Market in Emurua Dikirr.
He said construction of the university would be undertaken in memory of the late area MP Johana Ng’eno, who died in a helicopter crash earlier this year.
“You asked me for the construction of a university here at Emurua Dikirr; I have today brought you Ksh1.2 billion for the construction of a new university that will be in honour of the late Johana Ng’eno,” Ruto said.
The President said the institution would give students from Emurua Dikirr and other parts of Narok better access to university education without having to travel far from home.
“The university will help the children from this area, Narok and the rest of Narok,” he said.
The university plan follows earlier efforts by Narok leaders to establish a satellite campus of Maasai Mara University in Emurua Dikirr in memory of Ng’eno. The county government had committed 100 acres of land for the proposed institution.
New road for Emurua Dikirr
Ruto also announced that the government would construct a new Class B road to improve transport in the area.
He said the government had initially planned to recarpet the existing low-volume seal road but had now opted for a more extensive reconstruction.
“I have also seen your road here, which was initially a low-volume seal road. We have now allocated money for the construction of a new international class B road,” Ruto said.
The road will run from Salgaa through Chebole, Abosi and Shartuka, linking Emurua Dikirr with other parts of the South Rift.
Ruto said the construction is expected to begin later this year, with the official launch planned for October.
“I will be coming to launch the construction in October,” he said.
He did not give the estimated cost of the road project.
The planned road is part of wider efforts to improve links across the South Rift, including connections to the proposed Rironi-Mau Summit Expressway and other roads serving Narok, Kericho and neighbouring counties.
The two projects are expected to improve access to education, transport and markets in Emurua Dikirr.
The announcements also come months after the death of Ng’eno, who was among six people killed when a helicopter crashed in Chepkiep, Mosop Sub-County, in March 2026.
