Moi University’s Arsonists shocked Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad to claim the rugby sevens title at the ongoing Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) Championships on Wednesday at the University of Eldoret grounds in Uasin Gishu County.

The competition, featuring five teams, was contested in a round-robin format.

The title was decided in a tense final match that was marred by scenes of violence after the last try.

The Arsonists held Blak Blad to a draw and lifted the trophy on points difference, finishing with a superior tally of 67 points compared to Blak Blad’s 62.

In the thrilling encounter, Elisha Thuo scored two tries for the champions, with Brian Titus adding the other. Blak Blad replied through tries by Sospeter Osike and Elvis Otete as the match ended in a 17-17 draw.

Thuo opened the scoring and converted his try to give the Arsonists a 7-0 lead before touching down again, though he missed the conversion to make it 12-0.

Osike then pulled one back for Blak Blad and converted to reduce the deficit to 12-7 before crossing again, this time missing the conversion to level the scores at 12-12.

Otete’s unconverted try put Kenyatta University ahead 17-12, but a swift counter-attack by Titus saw the Arsonists draw level at 17-17.

The result proved sufficient for Moi University to clinch the title on points difference.
